Courses overview

Galician singing

Verónica Codesal
MABO - Lycée Maria-Boodschap - Rue de la Braie 22, 1000 Bruxelles

In this course, you will learn to sing in the Galician tradition with Veronica Codesal. Even though Galicia, known for the pilgrimage site of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, is only a small region of the north of Spain, it has a strong musical tradition that has delighted researchers such as Alan Lomax. Artists like Carlos Nuñez, Mercedes Peon, or our very own Belgo-Galician Ialma, have conquered the world with their passionate Galician music and voices. The course is based on oral transmission and is for anyone who likes singing in groups. No prior musical knowledge is required! You will learn different rhythms (Muiñeira, Xota, Pasodoble, Mazurka, rumba …) and dive into the rich Galician repertoire accompagnied by the pandeireta, the typical percussion instrument from that region. We will also focus on interpretation, ornamentation, and vocal timbre.

Everybody is welcome, no matter their level!

Verónica Codesal

Originally from Galicia, from her earliest years Veronica showed her love for Galician dance, song and music at the Centro Galego de Bruxelas, where she became in due course a teacher of the dance and pandereita group. For more than 20 years she has toured with the group “ialma”, of which she is one of the founding members. She was also a member of the group Urban Trad , which almost brought Belgium victory in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003.

Through all these artistic activities she has always wanted to promote the Galician culture and language.
