In this course, you will learn to sing in the Galician tradition with Xavier Sánchez e Iglesias. Even though Galicia, known for the pilgrimage site of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, is only a small region of the north of Spain, it has a strong musical tradition that has delighted researchers such as Alan Lomax. Artists like Carlos Nuñez, Mercedes Peon, or our very own Belgo-Galician Ialma, have conquered the world with their passionate Galician music and voices. The course is based on oral transmission and is for anyone who likes singing in groups. No prior musical knowledge is required! You will learn different rhythms (Muiñeira, Xota, Pasodoble, Mazurka, rumba …) and dive into the rich Galician repertoire. We will also focus on interpretation, ornamentation, and vocal timbre. Everybody is welcome, no matter their level!
Xavier is a member of the Belgo-Galician band A Contrabanda. This band was created at Muziekpublique and takes part in many international festivals. Xavier graduated in traditional singing techniques and pandeireta of the Xunta de Galicia. He has followed courses with Marisol Palomo (band member of Ialma) and masterclasses with Galician artists such as Xose Lois Romero, Suso Vaamonde, Quique Peon, Ruote, Xurxo Fernandes, …
