Body percussion
Body percussion is the use of the body as an instrument to produce sounds! This still relatively unknown practice comes from both the world of dance and music. Various rhythmic body practices can be found in many cultural traditions, making the approach to body percussion very broad!
For the past few decades, body percussion has increasingly been recognized as an independent artistic practice, allowing performers to develop their artistic and pedagogical approaches.
The course
The lessons are given in groups, enabling participants to connect with a common energy and resonate together while developing this musical language.
A minimum of 8 participants per level is required for these courses to take place!
The beginner+ course will allow you to consolidate and enrich the basic vocabulary of body percussion while refining precision and expressiveness through movement.
We will cover sequences in multiple parts, also developing memory work. Polyrhythms will also be practiced to strengthen your autonomy and encourage both overall and focused listening.
A basic knowledge of rhythmic body practices is expected to follow this course (body percussion, rhythm courses at an academy, tap dance).
In the advanced level course, I will offer you a range of exercises aimed at acquiring a broader vocabulary, further sensitizing your listening, deeply working on your rhythmic precision, and acquiring certain techniques, all in the service of artistic expression. Through targeted warm-ups and specific choreographies, we will address ternary, binary, and asymmetrical rhythms.
At the heart of our practice will be the exploration of the link between rhythm and movement: how to integrate a rhythmic dynamic into our gestures; how to infuse movement into the rhythmic sequences we address; how to cultivate a fluid movement while remaining rhythmically aware and precise.
Regular experience in rhythmic practice over several years and a strong interest in body expression and movement are required to follow this course. Having already practiced body percussion is a plus!
Lydie Thonnard has been passionate about music since childhood. At first she studied the flute, but she quickly developed her interest in improvisation, percussion and rhythmic music in general. She is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in ‘Rhythms and rhythmics’ at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. She is also very active as a musician in various projects, including Auster Loo, Trio O3, Les Chanteuses Anonymes and La Crapaude
