Instruments and music from the Middle East

This week we would like to introduce you to some of our World Music & Dance Academy classes. The World Music & Dance Academy is one of the few academies where such a wide range of courses is offered, so varied and representative of so many cultures. For example, our academy this year offers eight (!) different courses in Middle Eastern instruments and music.

Turkish cello with Damla Aydin

NEW COURSE!

In this cello class, you will learn to understand and apply Turkish music, maqams and rhythms, with special techniques related to the bow and other ornamental techniques in search of authentic sounds.

Qanûn (eastern harp) with Souhad Najem

Souhad Najem is undoubtedly one of the greatest masters of the qanûn. This former student of the Institute of High Musical Studies Baghdad, became a teacher in Iraq and Tunisia and is the author of collections of compositions considered as references in the teaching of qanûn. As he lives in Belgium, he has devoted a lot of energy to transferring his knowledge to future generations. Thanks to him, many children in Belgium discover the cultural heritage of their family. With some students, Souhad participated in the show “Arabs Got Talent” broadcast on the Saudi channel MBC.

Doudouk (Double reed flute) with Vardan Hovanissian

Of Armenian origin, Vardan Hovanissian is known to be one of the great specialists of the traditional flutes of Armenia, like the chvi, but it is with the doudouk that he finds an instrument to the measure of his talent. Vardan graduated from Romanos Melikian Superior Music Schoolde Yerevan (Armenia), and is now one of the best musicians of doudouk, an instrument whose woody sound is more and more coveted. This wind instrument, which dates from the 5th century BC, perfectly reflects the sound and soul of Armenia.

Middle Eastern Violin with Shalan Alhamwy

Shalan Alhamwy is a Syrian violinist and composer. The violin is one of the star elements of Middle Eastern music. The violin makes it possible to sing, to accompany other instruments. This is one of the key instruments of Arab orchestras. He studied classical and Arabic music and mastered both genres by playing and composing. He teaches individual violin lessons on Thursday and he also directs the East-West ensemble with Jonas Malfliet.

Oud (oriental lute) with Elias Bachoura

Elias Bachoura is a former student of Iraqi legend Munir Bashir. He studied at the Damascus Conservatory in his native Syria. Then he went to Brussels to study Western composition with Professor Daniel Capellitti. His dual musical knowledge, Eastern and Western, makes him an extremely interesting teacher. This year, he teaches oud, the oriental lute, as well as the Middle Eastern Choir & Music Theory

Ney (Arabic flute) avec Tammam Alramadan

Tammam Alramadan is also a prominent musician from Syria. In 2010, he graduated from the Aleppo Conservatory. The ney is the oldest instrument of Arab and Oriental music. Conditions in Syria forced him to emigrate to Europe. He has lived in Belgium for a few years and passionately shares his knowledge of the Arab flute in our academy.

Bendir (Framedrums) with Robbe Kieckens

Robbe Kieckens, a great aficionado of frame drums, is largely self-taught. After a time of solitary practice and experience in several projects, he went to develop his technique and his knowledge with Zohar Fresco and Fahrettin Yarkin, masters of different forms of frame drums and oriental rhythms. He teaches every Wednesday in Brussels.

Darbouka (Oriental Percussion) with Simon Leleux

Simon Leleux is one of those musicians who devote themselves to their instrument until they know him perfectly. Simon Leleux, a graduate in education at the Conservatory of Namur and Turkish drumming at the Rotterdam Conservatory, is a student of the master of the darbuka Levent Yildirim and has followed several masterclasses with the undisputed master of frame drums: Zohar Fresco.
