Bendir (Oriental frame drums)
Frame-drums are a large family of percussion instruments found all over the world. They are probably amongst the most ancient percussion instruments and have developed in various formes, large, small, with our without jingles. There are many traditions that developed a rich pallet of sounds and rhythms, and some modern developments that learnt from these traditions and make new forms combining different aspects of those.
In the lessons we will focus on sound and technique, rhythms from different traditions, mainly Middle Eastern, as well as discover new developments in playing style on different.
The instrument
Some instruments will be brought by the teacher to be used, but bringing your own is very welcomed. We can help with purchasing decently priced quality instruments.
Robbe Kieckens is taking a sabbatical year. The lessons will be taken over by Carlo Strazzante this year.
Carlo Strazzante is a Belgian-Sicilian percussionist with a passion for traditional Eastern music, particularly Indian, Arabic, and Persian. He skillfully and creatively integrates techniques and instruments from various traditions, such as the bendir, tabla, tambourine, and cymbals. In addition to being a permanent member of SITARDUST, he collaborates with numerous musicians and groups, including Asad Qizilbash, Younes El Berdaoui, and the Fanfare du Belgistan.
