Bendir (Oriental frame drums)
Frame-drums are a large family of percussion instruments found all over the world. They are probably amongst the most ancient percussion instruments and have developed in various formes, large, small, with our without jingles. There are many traditions that developed a rich pallet of sounds and rhythms, and some modern developments that learnt from these traditions and make new forms combining different aspects of those.
In the lessons we will focus on sound and technique, rhythms from different traditions, mainly Middle Eastern, as well as discover new developments in playing style on different.
Some instruments will be brought by the teacher to be used, but bringing your own is very welcomed. We can help with purchasing decently priced quality instruments.
Robbe Kieckens, great aficionado of frame-drums, is largely self taught. After a period of self study and building up experience in different projects, he went to develop his technique and knowledge with a.o. Zohar Fresco and Fahrettin Yarkin, masters in different forms of frame-drums and eastern rhythms. He is performing and recording with a.o. Lâmekân Ensemble, Nathan Daems Village Quartet, HiM Percussion Ensemble, Soolmaan, La compagnie d’Elias and as a freelancer
