the course

Greek folk singing is a rich and diverse musical tradition that reflects the cultural history of Greece. This musical style encompasses genres such as Rebetiko, Laiko, and Smyrnaiiko, each with their unique characteristics and history. Rebetiko, often considered the “blues” of Greece, emerged in the early 20th century and was sung by the working class in cities. Laiko, a popular genre that developed after World War II, is known for its emotional lyrics and melodies. Smyrnaiiko has its roots in Greco-Ottoman culture and is influenced by the music of Asia Minor. Greek folk singing is characterized by the use of traditional instruments like the bouzouki, and expressive vocals that tell stories of love, loss, and everyday life.

During this course, you will learn various Greek songs and styles from different regions and genres. These songs are primarily sung a cappella and sometimes accompanied by traditional instruments. Through this, you will discover the context in which these songs originated and are sung, and gradually learn more about the history, geography, and culture of Greece. No prior musical knowledge is required; all levels are welcome!
