Tango ensemble

Gerardo Agnese
Camilo Córdoba
MABO - Lycée Maria-Boodschap - Rue de la Braie 22, 1000 Bruxelles

The Argentine Tango is known for its captivating rhythms and irregular tempo, as well as its passionate melodies. This is what makes this dance so sensual and its music so intoxicating! In a Tango ensemble, musicians learn to listen to each other, to feel and follow each other’s movements: they rarely play with a conductor and therefore enjoy great freedom. In the “a la parilla” tango (literally “on the grill”), group members interpret a theme and everyone knows their role, the codes that give the music its groove, and how to add their personal touch.

the course

The tango course aims to understand and to browse through this musical genre in all its forms: traditional, contemporary, modern, and fusion. As well as working on its different rhythms: tango, waltz, milonga. We will work on an adapted repertoire specifically arranged for the instruments of the ensemble. In the repertoire, we will find music from renowned composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Osvaldo Pugliese, Horacio Salgan, Anibal Troilo, as well as composers and bands of today.

The main idea of the course is to create a dynamic and fun musical ensemble, with a variety of instrument and a musical complexity adapted to the musicians. The course will tackle the fundamental notions of tango music: melody, rhythm, counterpoint, typical orchestral styles, contemporary and modern tango ensembles. The analysis will focus directly on developing musicality and music interpretation.
