Courses overview

Flamenco percussion (cajón & palmas)

Antonio Paz
MABO - Lycée Maria-Boodschap - Rue de la Braie 22, 1000 Bruxelles

the cours

Flamenco percussion forms the essential rhythmic foundation of flamenco, with the cajón and palmas at its core. The cajón, a resonant wooden box on which the musician plays, produces deep bass sounds and powerful accents. The rhythmic clapping of palmas ranges from subtle to powerful, uniquely emphasizing the musical dynamics. Together, these elements create the heartbeat of flamenco, uniting dancers and musicians.

Antonio Paz has been teaching flamenco singing at the academy for years and will introduce you in this course to the basics of various flamenco rhythms such as compases básicos, soleares, alegrías, fandangos, and many more. This training is valuable not only for singers but also for dancers and guitarists, as it helps to better understand the musical structure and dance.

All levels are welcome! Music theory knowledge is not required.

Antonio Paz

Antonio Paz was born in Brussels.  He was immersed in flamenco at the earliest age. He learned his first “letras” during bicycle rides with his father, a guitarist.  In the same period he started receiving musical theory and piano lessons. At age 14, Antonio Paz starts performing as a “cantor de atrás” (a singer that accompanies the dance) in various Benelux theatres.

In order to increase his musical range, he decides to tour, during four years, in Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaisia, …), where he performs with the best local musicians.

When he returns to Spain, he is seen in various theatres and flamenco festivals, alongside artists such as Carmen Linares, El Cabrero, Chano Lobato, Miguel Poveda, Aurora Vargas, Juana Amaya, Rafael del Carmen, Rafael Amargo…
He participates in various CDs:

– A mi vera (J. Baptiste Marino)
– Le bal des suds (Louis Winsberg)
– Moscatel (arrangements and music in collaboration with Antonio Paz Sr)
– Terrain vague (Anne Niepold)

His experience, as well as his knowledge of the “compas” and of the danse make him a valued asset in the flamenco world.
