Some music is not simply meant to be listened to: it creates spaces, evokes presences and transforms communities. Son Jarocho, which emerged three centuries ago in the ports of Veracruz, Mexico, where different cultures came together, is one such musical tradition.

It was born from the encounter between African rhythms, Spanish string instruments and Indigenous languages, and has been passed down from generation to generation through fandangos — late-night gatherings where décimas are improvised on the spot, where dancers stamp their feet on the tarima until the wood itself begins to vibrate, and where the boundary between musicians and audience completely disappears.

Sonex, one of the leading groups in contemporary Son Jarocho, takes you into the vibrant atmosphere of Veracruz. As a trio, Sonex brings the essence of this music to life in a setting that is both intimate and fiery. With virtuosic string playing, powerful rhythms and polyphonic vocals, they create a sound that is deeply rooted in tradition while being unmistakably contemporary.
