ICTMD Talk | Antonio Segura

Flamenco: history, rhythms and emotions of a living art form
Thursday 28 May 2026 - 19h00
Buen Vivir - Place Fernand Cocq 23, 1050 Ixelles
THU 28/05

Born in the heart of Andalusia, flamenco is much more than music: it is a way of life, a collective memory, and a language of the body and soul. Emerging from the blending of Andalusian, Romani, Arab, and Jewish cultures, it was passed down from generation to generation before conquering stages around the world.

Guitarist Antonio Segura will invite us on a journey through the history and evolution of flamenco, from its popular roots to its most contemporary expressions. Through the guitar, he will evoke the major styles (palos) of flamenco, their rhythmic and emotional diversity, and the essential role of the flamenco guitar as both a solo and accompanying instrument.

He will emphasize the transformation of the guitarist’s role over time, the importance of compás (rhythm), improvisation, and the intimate connection between music, dance, and song. The presentation will be enriched with live musical examples, videos, and anecdotes from his own artistic journey.

Originally from Spain, Antonio Segura now lives in Belgium, where he continues to create work that blends tradition and modernity. As a composer and performer, he has presented his projects on numerous stages and at festivals across Europe and beyond. With his trio OLEO, he explores the bridges between flamenco and jazz, constantly seeking to renew the expression of this living art form. A recognized educator, he also shares his passion through masterclasses and workshops.
