Courses overview

West-African guitar

Sina Kienou

the course

The Mandé culture in Burkina Faso is deeply rooted in music, stories, and social rituals, with the griot tradition forming an essential central element. Griots, as masters of oral history, use their music and stories not only to transmit the history of the community but also to highlight its core values and identity.

In addition to accompanying traditional melodies, the guitar in West African music serves as a source of inspiration for new compositions that reflect the rich diversity and deeply rooted traditions of the region. This music is renowned for its complex rhythmic patterns and vibrant improvisation.

While the West African guitar shares some similarities with its European counterpart, it distinguishes itself through its specific techniques and repertoire. The guitar technique in this context is strongly influenced by other African string instruments such as the kora and the hoddu, each with their own unique sound and playing style. Sina guides you step by step through basic chords, rhythms, embellishments like triplets, and improvisation techniques, drawing from these deeply rooted musical traditions to provide a rich and authentic learning experience.

Music theory is not required!
