Courses overview

Riq (Oriental percussion)

Robbe Kieckens
MABO - Lycée Maria-Boodschap - Rue de la Braie 22, 1000 Bruxelles

Riq, tef, tar… different names for this versatile tambourine, which originates from a wide region stretching from North Africa to Turkey. The instrument has a rich technical and rhythmic tradition. Thanks to the unique combination of drumhead and jingles played in various hand positions, the riq offers a wide dynamic range and a remarkably rich sound palette. From vocal accompaniment to leading instrument in large Arab orchestras, the riq plays a central role. In recent years, the global availability of online videos has also contributed to a strong technical and musical evolution of the instrument.

In this course, we begin with the basic sounds produced in different playing positions. We’ll explore traditional rhythms from the Arab world, North Africa, and Turkey, and dive into the art of rhythmic ornamentation. Later on, we’ll also explore contemporary influences through advanced techniques and rhythmic compositions.

Robbe Kieckens

Robbe Kieckens, a versatile percussionist who refuses to be put in a box, has been focusing primarily on Middle Eastern percussion for over a decade. He is passionate about rhythm, sound, and playing together — about sensitivity and fire, complexity and simplicity. A devoted autodidact, he gained most of his knowledge and skills through many rich collaborations and by learning via YouTube.

He also took part in workshops with inspiring percussionists such as Zohar Fresco, Fahrettin Yarkin, Aleix Tobias, and Itamar Doari. He plays in numerous projects, but is currently mainly involved in Spëcht (a percussion trio), Halva (Klezmer and Balkan music), and his collaboration with Shahab Azinmehr (Persian music).

In his project “Op de Koffie”, he performed in 21 YouTube videos, each time in a duo with a different guest.
