Interact with the vocal traditions of the Wagogo people of central Tanzania through traditional chants, call-and-response, polyphonic singing and dance. In this workshop, you will explore Gogo singing traditions such as chilumi and experience how voice, rhythm and movement come together in Wagogo music.
The workshop is conducted by Msafiri Zawose, a leading Tanzanian musician, multi-instrumentalist, educator and producer from the Wagogo musical tradition. He is the son of the late Dr. Hukwe Zawose, one of Tanzania’s internationally recognised traditional musicians. Msafiri grew up surrounded by Gogo music and learned traditional singing, instruments and musical practices from an early age. His work continues this tradition while developing a contemporary Gogo-fusion sound.
In this workshop, you will explore different styles of Wagogo singing, including traditional chants such as chilumi, call-and-response and polyphonic vocal patterns. You will learn how voices interact with percussion and polyrhythmic structures, and how singing, rhythm, movement and dance work together in Gogo musical traditions. The workshop is taught through listening, repetition, singing and collective participation. No previous musical experience is required.
The workshop starts at 6 P.M. and should be finished around 9 P.M.
