Connect with the musical traditions of East Africa through the music of the Wagogo people of central Tanzania, exploring traditional instruments, rhythms and polyrhythms. In this workshop, you will explore the ilimba and traditional percussion, learn rhythmic patterns and discover how different parts come together through collective playing.

The workshop is given by Msafiri Zawose, a Tanzanian multi-instrumentalist, musician, educator and producer from the Wagogo musical tradition. He is the son of the late Dr. Hukwe Zawose, one of Tanzania’s internationally recognised traditional musicians. Msafiri grew up surrounded by Gogo music and learned traditional instruments and musical practices from an early age. He has performed and toured internationally and developed his own Gogo-fusion style, combining traditional Gogo music with contemporary influences.

In this workshop, you will learn through listening, repetition and playing together. No previous musical experience is required.

The workshop starts at 6 P.M. and should be finished around 9 P.M.
