In recent years, Mokoomba have conquered the world music scene with the energy of the famous Victoria Falls, near where they live. Mokoomba have been on world tours, released widely-acclaimed CDs, featured on the line-up of prestigious festivals such as Roskilde and Sziget, appeared on the BBC TV programme “Later…with Jools Holland” and performed at the legendary Apollo Theater, New York.
Mokoomba is made up of six talented Zimbabwean musicians. Their tight, exciting sound is a mixture of Southern African melodies, Afrobeat and West African rhythms. The band’s name reflects their deep respect for the Zambezi river and for the boundless energy which it brings to the culture and music of the Tonga people, a minority ethnic group in Zimbabwe. The music combines pop, soukous and salsa with a rich mix of rhythms drawn from the Tonga culture and Southern Africa more widely.
Mokoomba launch their “world wide acoustic tour” at the beginning of 2017 to present their new album, Luyando, which is released in February 2017 on Outhere Records. Luyando is an acoustic project which sees the band return to a more traditional sound, in search of their roots and heritage. With Luyando the musicians strike a balance between maintaining tradition while at the same time modernising African music. Mokoomba is the future of Afrosound!
“It is not often as a promoter that I become a fan of a band but with Mokoomba it’s different as they are the best band I have seen over the last 15 years” – Paul Duhaney, Africa Oyé Festival, Liverpool.
