Author, composer and performer, Fatoum sings mainly in Tamazight on the European public stages. A woman of commitment, her lyrics and original compositions offer messages sensitive to the concerns of her native Rifian community and its diaspora in Europe. Passionate about the practice of Izran, she rehabilitates this cultural heritage for a wide audience, and leads the Suyt Izran collective of female singers.

Izran represent a heritage of musical poetry in the Tamazight language, more specifically Tarifit. Belonging to an ancient oral tradition, they are specific to the mountainous Rif region of northern Morocco. An izri (singular) is a short poem that carries its message in two metaphorical, melodic and rhythmic phrases, rhymed and accompanied on the adjoune (bendir). Originally sung by women in rural areas, izran are an art, an artistic skill at the service of collective, instantaneous and spontaneous celebrations. They testify to a great freedom of expression, referring to social contexts of resistance, a way of transcending heavy collective work as well as more personal and individual feelings, thanks to the beauty of a vocal force capable of transmitting the poetic vibration of a moment, of a feeling.

In a friendly atmosphere, seated around the tables in the foyer (bar) of the Théâtre Molière, the ICTM Talks are a program of lessons on six different musical traditions and the culture from which they originate. Each of the six sessions will be devoted to a different style of music, the repertoire and the territory associated with it, and presented by specialists from the world of the arts, academia or enthusiasts of the music style in question.
