Did you miss the Sonamos Latinoamerica Festival? Well, we did too! The Brussels festival that celebrates the musical traditions of Latin America is finally back. This two day festival, which is directly linked to its Argentine counterpart, invites top artists to celebrate the music of Peru, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico and Venezuela.
To open the festival, we welcome Argentine accordionist Javier Colli. While Argentina is internationally known for tango and bandoneon, it is less well known for chamamé, a traditional musical genre from the province of Corrientes in the border region with Brazil. Chamamé has been on the rise in recent years thanks to figures such as Raul Barboza, Renato Borghetti or Chango Spasiuk. It brings together various elements from the indigenous Guarani people and the Spanish conquistadors, but also from Italian and German migrants. It is a style that is widely danced and played on both accordion and guitar. Javier Colli is one of its great ambassadors, taking chamamé far from Corrientes, as his music has taken him to South Korea, the United States, Mexico, Portugal and now Belgium, where he will come to present his latest album Chamamé (2019) with guitarist Sebastian José Rios.
Luz Maria Carriquiry has embodied the soul and spirit of Peruvian music over her long career spanning 22 years. After 15 years touring with the Latin American group Sin Líneas en el Mapa, she embarked on a solo career, released two albums and began working with guitarist and producer Ernesto Hermoza. Ernesto Hermoza, for his part, is a great name in Afro-Peruvian guitar, who also accompanies the singer Susana Baca. A self-taught musician and composer, he has been developing since 1991 a unique blend of Creole, flamenco and jazz. He has represented Peru at guitar festivals around the world, and has shared the stage with world-class musicians such as: Quincy Jones, Ralph Towner, Frank Bungarten, Marco Pereira, El Cigala, etc. He has also recorded with, among others: Joaquín Sabina, Susana Baca, Jorge Drexler, Eva Ayllon, Pedro Suarez Vertiz, Micky Gonzales, Jean Pierre Magnet, Lucho Quequezana, and others, earning him 4 Latin Grammy nominations and 1 gold album.
Ernesto Hermoza will also give an Afro-Peruvian guitar masterclass on Friday 7 October from 2 to 4.30 pm. More info on our website.
