In 2019, the Department of Culture, Youth & Media launched a new Register of Inspiring Examples for the safeguarding of intangible heritage. By analogy with UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices, it makes projects visible that keep intangible heritage alive and pass it on to future generations.
On the advice of the Expert Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Minister of Culture added the Gnawa Festival and JOLA project of Muziekpublique to the Register on 13 January 2021. The JOLA-project brings for the first time artists together in an album that reflects the Brussels gnawa scene. The Gnawa Festival highlighted this event.
