Tamala in the Secret Garden in Gent

30 June 2021

Intimate concerts in an imaginary courtyard garden

The Handelsbeurs in Ghent is opening its doors to the public again this summer with a series of intimate concerts. For the occasion, the concert hall will be transformed into a green oasis, complete with plant jungle, softly singing birds and subdued light. Welcome to Ghent’s Secret Garden.

Tamala

The trio Tamala or ‘travellers’, like their name, moves between different instruments and traditions. The three of them naturally balance between tradition and innovation, power and refinement, dream and reality, north and south. Tamala brings an innovative and original repertoire, which carries the Senegalese musical heritage and feeds on the eclectic influences of Mola Sylla, Bao Sissoko and Wouter Vandenabeele.  Tamala takes us on a journey where the sounds of violin and kora merge, and where Mola’s voice is the guide that reveals the depths of the soul.

In addition to songs from their first album, Tamala will also give a preview of their second album, Lumba.

“Calm and peaceful, Sissoko rolls out the majestic grooves,

while Vandenabeele mostly restricts himself to subtle melodic interventions.

This gives Sylla plenty of space to enchant with his voice.”
