Palatca Village Band (Roumania)

Wild Hungarian music from Transylvania
Friday 28 March 2025 - 19h00
Het Gildenhuis - 57 Petite Rue des Loups, 1070 Brussels
FRI 28/03

Authentic Folk Music from the Heart of Mezőség (Transylvania, Romania), untouched by the passage of time, the mesmerizing folk music of Mezőség is brought to life by the village orchestra of the Roma Codoba family. In an era of rapid modernization, preserving centuries-old traditions is increasingly challenging. Yet, with dedication and passion, the Codoba musicians work tirelessly to maintain and pass down their unique heritage. Led by primás Florin, alongside his sons and the Palatca Village Band, they keep this musical legacy alive.

The folk music of Palatca (Transylvania, Romania) is more volatile than gasoline—yet far more explosive! Like a roaring, iron-clad steam locomotive, Transylvania’s oldest village orchestra charges through time, leaving no heart untouched in its wake. Who knew that a mere five string instruments could shake rooftiles and stir souls alike? The hypnotic and swelling hum of the kontra strings creates a thrilling, irresistible force. The band’s playing is best compared to a tightly wound spring, stretched to its limit and suddenly released.

This music has endured for centuries and remains in high demand at local weddings as well as Hungarian dance houses in Budapest, Utrecht, London, New York, and Toronto. With its powerful groove and electrifying timing, the melodies—Hungarian, Romanian, and Roma—are nothing short of breathtaking. The violin ornamentations are dazzling, the ancient scales (including microtones) timeless, and the harmonic approach is truly archaic—some might even call it weird!

The evening kicks off at 7 PM with a beginner’s csárdás dance initiation by Balázs Pilich and Panni Demeter.
