Since moving to France, Matt Elliott has started releasing CDs under his own name as a singer-songwriter. Twenty years ago, Matt Elliott released Drinking Songs, the first part of an important trilogy: a beautiful album with seven dark folk tracks that is still the most listened to album on streaming platforms and highly praised by fans of the Bristol native.
To celebrate the anniversary of the most iconic work in his discography, Matt Elliott today presents ‘Drinking Songs Live 20 Years On’. Matt Elliott is a singer/songwriter who for once was not inspired by the American song tradition but rather by the European one. For example, you can find Greek, Spanish, Slavic, Portuguese and French influences in Matt Elliott’s music. A profound exploration of the human condition, ‘Drinking Songs’ is a journey through the most inaccessible corners of the soul. Each song on this album is a story in itself, a window into moments of pain, nostalgia and reflection. Elliott has created a new emotional language in Dark Folk, one that whispers the delicacy of pain, that seeks neither violence nor revenge, but caresses -. The sobs of his saxophone, like the sighs of his guitar strings, obey their own laws, comforted by the silence. Matt Elliott sings of a secret but reassuring loneliness that is rooted in each of us.
