On March 20, Muziekpublique organizes master classes in the Molière theater. The four musicians who will play a concert on stage at Muziekpublique that evening will give workshops on their specialty in the afternoon from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. An intermediate level is required for each masterclass.
You can register until Friday March 15th!
Clawhammer Banjo Workshop (Nora Brown)
In this workshop we will learn a banjo melody in the clawhammer style, something from the Eastern Kentucky region of the United States. We will explore rhythmic techniques that can be incorporated into both right and left hand movements and apply them to the melody (or song) we are learning. This class is open to intermediate students and is best suited to those who have a background in playing their instrument and want to add to the repertoire.
Mandoline (Eli West)
In this workshop we briefly explore the role of the mandolin as a melody and accompanying rhythm instrument, and we work on technique. Eli will zoom in on playing melodies and variations, bass lines and so on.
Folksongwriting (Kris Drever)
Kris introduces you to writing exercises and tools to create and write together in groups. He will also talk about what inspires him as a songwriter and how he uses a deep knowledge of folk and traditional music to influence his original material. Depending on the interests emerging from the group, Kris can address themes such as song interpretation, accompaniment grooves, harmony ideas, rhythmic techniques and anything else that participants find interesting about his playing, writing or singing.
North American fiddle (Laura Cortese)
You can bow your own way! For musicians who can quickly learn melodies by ear and have some experience with North American music (Appalachian, Cape Breton, Québécois, and/or New England). Viola’s and cello’s are also welcome! Laura will present a workshop focusing on groove in North American folk music. After learning each tune, she will dig into how the bow is the key to groove and expression. Together, we will explore how to translate different grooves and rhythmic patterns into hidden gems in the North American repertoire. Our goal will be to leave the class with a tool kit of possibilities to translate to favorite melodies at home.
