The most remarkable proof of the medieval past of Brussels, the last vestige of the second city walls, hides under its roof a splendid attic with a wood frame and ideal acoustics. Push open the heavy doors of this neo-Gothic tower, take the spiral stoned staircase and walk around before settling down for the concert of the Belgian-Senegalese trio, “Tamala” who will take you on into their magical universe.
Guided by a natural musical alchemy, the musicians alternate with ease between tradition and innovation, strength and subtlety, dream and reality. Beyond their musical understanding, they also share values that they have decided to defend through their music. Their support for a Senegalese school has indeed earned them the nickname “Ceppe’s ambassadors”.
Mola Sylla sings with the power of the heart. His grainy voice makes him one of Senegal’s most creative singers, as known with his long collaboration with Dutch cellist Ernst Reijsiger, who he composed the soundtrack for Werner Herzog’s film The Blue Yonder with. Multi-instrumentalist, he plays xalam (West African lute), kongoma and kalimba (thumb pianos) as well as percussion.
Bao Sissoko is a talented kora player recognized throughout Europe. Master of this West African harp, he has not only played alongside the famous Baaba Maal but he is also well known for his collaboration with Malick Pathé Sow.
Belgian folk violinist Wouter Vandenabeele surprises again and again with his bold collaborations. After his collaboration with the Syrian oud player, Elias Bachoura, and his participation in the folk big band Olla Vogala, Wouter is now involved in this unique trio.
