ICTM Workshop #2 - Musical traditions and instruments from Latin America

By Osvaldo Hernandez
Thursday 18 November 2021 - 19h00
Molière Theatre - Galerie de la Porte de Namur, 3 Square du Bastion, 1050 Bruxelles
THU 18/11

The musical traditions of Latin America cannot be separated from the upheavals that have taken place on the continent and the issues that arise today. Osvaldo Hernandez will show us how music reveals the importance of nature and ecology, through traditional instruments from pre-Columbian civilisations such as the Maya and Aztec cultures. He will also talk about the difficult work of preserving traditions, which are sometimes on the verge of extinction, through the history of Spanish colonisation and the questions of transmission, also in view of the evolution of today’s society. He will demonstrate several musical instruments during the session to illustrate the discussions and to stimulate others.

Multi-instrumentalist and teacher, Osvaldo Hernandez was born in Ixmiquilpan (Mexico). Since the age of 19, he has travelled around and researched the traditional percussion styles of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the descendants of African slaves and European settlers.

NEW: THE CYCLE OF ICTM WORKSHOPS

Get to know musical traditions through a variety of voices, views and interpretations. Topics covered in these introductory sessions are the context of the performances, the conditions for their existence and the events that have left their mark on the history of these traditions.

In a friendly atmosphere, seated around tables in the Foyer of the Molière Theatre, the audience participates in a presentation prepared by the speaker, which is interspersed with moments of exchange with the participants. French will be spoken in this workshop.
