Mashrabiya ft. Christos Barbas

Trio blossom with oriental roots
Friday 23 October 2020 - 20h00
Molière Theatre - Galerie de la Porte de Namur, 3 Square du Bastion, 1050 Bruxelles
FRI 23/10
Mashrab refers to wine and is used symbolically in the poetry of spiritual ascetics or sufis, when attempting to describe the ecstasy and beauty of the Divine Presence. In addition, the mashrabiya is a characteristic ornamented element in Arabic architecture, defined to give shade and protection from the hot summer sun and allowing the cool air from the street to flow through.
Once upon a hot Mediterranean summer, Trio Mashrabiya was founded thanks to the encounter of Meira Segal and Tristan Driessens, two young musicians with a passion for Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern music. Inspired by their common musical background, their original compositions reveal a free and modern approach related to a deep understanding of the ancient Eastern traditions.
The trio is usually composed of Meira Segal, playing the reed flute or ney, but this time she will be replaced by Christos Barbas, playing the ney and the kaval.
TRIO MASHRABIYA:
Christos Barbas (ney, kaval)
Tristan Driessens (oud, lavta)
Bijan Chemirani (zarb)
