Living Room Music Festival 2021

Welcome to the Archiducs and Logis Floréal neighbourhood in Watermael-Boitsfort, where the Living Room Music Festival will take you to a Garden Edition this year!
On Sunday 13/06, ten locals will open their garden gates to host a concert of traditional world music and make the neighbourhood come alive. For one afternoon, come and discover musicians from different horizons and meet your neighbours, the spectators, and the volunteers at the festival.
How does it work? Choose three of the ten concerts on offer. Each group plays three concerts of 30 minutes each, separated by a 30 minute break during which the audience moves from one garden to another. Check out the programme below, and choose your three concerts! Be daring, it’s not every day that you can make a musical journey between the five continents within such a small area!

Hamed Urmiye is from Hawler, Iraq and has recently arrived in Belgium as a refugee. He brought with him all his musical baggage, his extensive knowledge of Kurdish songs and his mastery of the tembur, a long-neck lute from the Anatolian saz family. Accompanied by the strings of the tembur, he surprises us with “dengbêj” long sung traditional stories. These beautiful epics are handed down from generation to generation by the “bards” of the region. Fervent amoureux et grand nostalgique de la musique et des années 70, de la liberté de l’époque, Jean-Nicolas vous accueillera chaleureusement dans la maison. En rentrant dans sa maison, vous pourrez peut-être distinguer un piano, une contrebasse ou un violoncelle. En effet, musicien depuis toujours, il est passé par le rock, le classique, le jazz et l’improvisation! Shams is a meeting between two musicians from different backgrounds and origins, but also one between oud and cello. Surprising improvisations and characterful compositions run into each other at the crossroads of intense tradition and contemporary freedom. Taking into account the roots and influence of each other's cultures, the duo explores their contrasts: the two artists integrate into their playing the notion of trance from which you rise beyond yourself. This philosophy is found in some cultures and especially in Sufism. The name of the project is therefore a tribute to Shams of Tabriz, a Sufi from the 12th century who met Rumi and awakened the poet in him.Akram Ben Romdhane : oud Stann Duguet : cello |

De nature très énergique, Sabine aime danser, jouer, chanter. Elle a pratiqué le piano durant des années, pris des cours de solfège, des cours de théâtre, de chant lyrique, a également pratiqué l’accordéon diatonique et cerise sur le gâteau, chante et joue dans une pièce de théâtre. Comme vous l’avez compris, elle passait son temps dans les académies et sera plus que ravie de vous accueillir dans son jardin.

French fiddle player Jean-Christophe Gairard presents a new version of his Transylvanian repertoire collected between Beica de Jos and Sancraiu in Romania. Inspiring music handed down by his friends and teachers Marcel Râmba and Tcha Limberger and from the repertoire of legends like Alexandru Titrus or Tibi Gheza. Récemment nouvelle locataire, elle est plus que ravie à l’idée d’accueillir dans son jardin un concert de musique. Malgré le fait qu’elle n’ait jamais pratiqué de musiques, contrairement à son fils qui a joué du saxophone et sa petite-fille de la guitare électrique, elle se réjouit de danser avec vous et de partager sa culture colombienne.

This folk duo consists of two ‘badjawes’ (chatterboxes in Walloon) who take their audience on a journey with a fiery, insatiable urge. Accompanied by their inseparable companions, the violin and the accordion, the duo sings in a dozen different languages. The suitcase of the two ladies from Liège contains infectious humor and a passion for music from Europe and elsewhere, in which they respond perfectly to each other. De nature polyvalente, Evelyne s’intéresse à tout. Elle fait partie d’une chorale entièrement féminine, appelée Anakrouzes, pratiquant chants du monde et polyphonie. Elle se rend également à des festivals et entre temps, est artiste plasticienne. Comme elle dit, il faudrait plusieurs vies pour faire tout ce qu’on voudrait faire ! En tant qu’artiste plasticienne, elle crée elle-même son papier et fabrique ses lampes, sa décoration… Une véritable exposition d’art chez elle.

Laura Cortese is a violinist, singer, songwriter and organiser. After leaving California to study at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, she founded the ‘Miles of Music Camp’ and the ‘BCMfest’ festival. She played with several bands and founded her own string quartet ‘Laura Cortese & the Dance Card’s. Their self-written songs are based on the themes and patterns of authentic folk songs while integrating new rhythms, sounds and colour palettes. As soon as Laura starts playing – with her percussive strumming on the violin and her powerful sultry voice – you are plunged into a heavy dose of post-folk. Sa maison est l’une des plus anciennes du quartier, voire même la première ! Rodolphe, musicien aguerri, l’a achetée en 1978. Cela fait plus de 40 ans maintenant qu’il vit dans cette maison, pleine de souvenirs, de photos, d’instruments, donnant vue sur un jardin magnifique. Passionné d’art et de musique du moyen-âge qui aujourd’hui se font rares et sera ravi de partager leurs secrets avec vous !

Antonio Segura was born in Seville (Spain), where he discovered the guitar at the age of 11 and studied with the great masters of flamenco such as Isidoro Carmona, Mario Escudero, Pedro Escalona … At the age of 17 he emigrated with his parents to Belgium. He takes classes at the Jazz Studio in Antwerp, where he studies harmony and music theory. He is co-founder of the groups Yerba Güena – Faena – Macande and takes part in several international tours with groups from other genres such as jazz and oriental music. He has been invited several times to the largest Belgian festivals: Couleur Café, Brussels Summer festival, Fêtes de Wallonie, Francofolies de Spa, and shared the stage with Leonardo Amuedo or Michel Hatzigeorgiu. But in Dominique’s garden he goes back to the essence of flamenco, in a duo with singer José Liguero. This very popular cantaor shines in the cante jondo, the deep flamenco singing. Dans cette spacieuse maison transmise de génération en génération, Dominique et son mari vous y accueilleront avec joie. Dominique est très impliquée dans le quartier. Elle aime la musique mais il est rare qu’elle en écoute à la maison, préférant largement un concert ou une belle découverte plutôt que d’écouter un CD ou la radio. Elle aime les concerts car c’est l’occasion de découvrir des nouvelles musiques, notamment les musiques traditionnelles. Quoi de mieux, dans ce cas, que de faire venir le festival directement dans son jardin ?

ﻉ is the eighteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, also one of the most difficult vowels to pronounce for western people. As it is often indicated in Arabic chat- and SMS-conversation as 3, and in transliteration as ‘ain’, 3’Ain seemed an appropriate name for a trio playing contemporary jazz with oriental influences. In 2015 Yamen Martini (trumpet) moved from Syria to Belgium, where he met Piet Maris (accordion) and together they started working on music for a theatre play in 2016. After that, Piet invited Yamen as a guest musician with Jaune Toujours, both live and on on their album Europeana (2018). In the summer of 2019, Yamen and Piet asked Otto Kint (double bass) to join them in their musical exchange and out of this union 3’Ain was born. Jean-François, ancien amateur de bals folks et de queimada à Muziekpublique, décide aujourd’hui d’ouvrir ses portes et d’inviter les artistes chez lui. Ce sera l’occasion pour lui de donner une nouvelle vie à cette maison familiale qui fut aussi durant six mois un toit pour les migrants. Aujourd’hui, il la rénove, la retape pour continuer ce projet et en faire un véritable hameau de rencontre d’accueil et de paix. Toujours heureux de découvrir, de rencontrer, de partager, Jean-François sera plus que ravi de vous accueillir !

Zouratié Koné is a master percussionist from a family of griots (caste of musicians / storytellers). Born in Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso), he also lived in Mali and Ivory Coast, and has family roots in Senegal and Guinea Conakry. He has mastered several West African traditions. The singer, musician and instrument maker is recognized as a master of the djembe, dumdum, tama (talking drum), longa, kora, ngoni and balafon. Koné has mastered hundreds of different rhythms and songs from the oral tradition of West Africa. During this garden concert he unveils a small part of his extensive repertoire, which he usually plays with the Zouratié Koné ensemble. Avec un jardin spacieux, ancienne artiste, Nadia a pratiqué du violoncelle. Elle aime toutes sortes de musique: baroque, africaine, … mais son cœur bat particulièrement pour la musique latino et plus précisément colombienne. Elle est ravie de vous accueillir dans son jardin avec son grand arbre de magnolia rose et ces anémones fleuries.

Cecilia Peçanha is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer. The career of this Brazilian artist is entirely devoted to early music, Brazilian music and jazz. With a master’s degree in recorder at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in her pocket, but above all with a lot of passion for bossa nova (a musical genre that stems from a cross between samba and jazz), choro, baião, samba, jazz and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, she gives flute lessons and workshops on recorder, flute, guitar and singing in various schools in Belgium where her roots are never far away. With a great concert she takes us into her lusophone world! |

Cela fait plus de 10 ans que Benjamin habite à Watermael. Il n’a pas de genre de musique particulier, il aime juste la musique, disons mélomane. Si il devait faire un classement de genre de musique ça serait du jazz, passant par du rock pour enfin aller dans le hip hop. Il sera content de vous accueillir dans son grand jardin.

Anana Harouna was born in Agadez, Niger, as a member of the nomadic tamasheq (tuareg) people living in the Sahara Desert. At the age of 12, he and his family went into exile in Libya and underwent military training. But the musician has found a better way to expose the injustice that his people are victims of: making music with his guitar. In 2006, Anana Harouna founded the group Kel Assouf in Brussels, which mixes traditional Tuareg music with rock and electronic music. In 2019 he released his album Black Tenere, a tribute to Tumast, the Tamasheq people. For once he comes solo and acoustically to share with us his values and the keywords of his music: peace, love and social justice. |

Bienvenue chez Philippe ! Il vous accueillera à bras ouvert dans son spacieux jardin hérité de sa belle-mère. Ancien archéologue et diplomate à la retraite, il a parcouru le monde. Passant de l’Afrique du Nord jusqu’à l’Afrique subsaharienne, du Moyen-Orient à l’Europe de l’Est et pour enfin déposer ses valises définitivement à Watermael. Durant ces voyages, Watermael a toujours été un point de chute. Il aime la musique méditerranéenne et il est curieux de découvrir d’autres musiques traditionnelles.

Reservations for the Living Room Music Festival are highly recommended due to the small amount of tickets available (because of Covid regulations).
A ticket for the festival costs 12€ (or 10€ for Muziekpublique members), and gives you access to 3 concerts of your choice.
Choose the type of ticket you want, and the amount for each of them. (member or non-member). Because of Covid regulations, you cannot book more than 5 tickets.
Then, select your 3 concerts, at compatible hours ! (if a concert is not available in the list, it means it is already sold out)
