Rhythms from India
The course
Discover rhythm from a new perspective through the fascinating language of Indian percussion.
Music has always traveled—crossing cultures and borders, transforming instruments, techniques, and rhythms along the way. Today, the Indian rhythmic system is a major influence on many musicians who, by immersing themselves in it, uncover new depth and richness in their practice.
In Indian classical music, every percussion sound is associated with a specific syllable. These syllables form a true musical language—alive and expressive. This language lies at the heart of North Indian traditions with the tabla, as well as South Indian traditions with the mridangam. Rhythmic solfège, known as solkattu, involves reciting and developing complex rhythmic patterns while marking the rhythmic cycle (tala) with hand gestures.
This course offers an alternative approach to rhythm, drawing on the distinctive systems of both Hindustani and Carnatic classical styles. It is designed for those who wish to explore these rhythmic structures using various percussion instruments—such as the bendir or tambourine—or simply through the voice, which here becomes a powerful tool for rhythmic awareness.
Special attention will be given to vocal recitation, precise pronunciation of syllables, and a clear understanding of rhythmic meter. This practice opens up new perspectives—not only for percussionists and musicians, but also for vocalists seeking to deepen their sense of rhythm.
The course is intended for percussionists with basic knowledge of their instrument, as well as for anyone curious to deepen their connection to rhythm and explore a musical tradition that is both rich and expressive.
Carlo Strazzante is a percussionist with a deep passion for traditional Eastern music, particularly from India, the Arab world, and Persia. He skilfully and creatively integrates techniques and instruments from various traditions, such as the bendir, tabla, tambourine, and cymbals. He collaborates with numerous musicians and groups, including Bert Cornelis, Asad Qizilbash, Younes El Berdaoui, the Orchestre du Belgistan, and Sitardust.
