Buen Vivir - Place Fernand Cocq 23, 1050 Ixelles
THU 13/02

What are ICTMD Talks?

ICTMD Talks are a series of courses on six different musical traditions and the culture from which they emerge. Each of the six sessions will be dedicated to a different musical style, repertoire and related area, presented by specialists from the world of music, academia or enthusiasts of the musical style in question. We will present a diversity of perspectives to discuss these musical traditions, highlighting the context of performance, the conditions of the musical tradition’s existence and the events that have marked its history.

In a friendly atmosphere, seated in the foyer of the Espace Buen Vivir, participants will be able to exchange ideas after the specialist’s presentation.

Exploring the rich heritage of bagpipe cultures in Spain

From Galicia to Mallorca, Spain is a bagpipe stronghold. No less than six or seven regions boast their own different type of bagpipe, each with their own music, culture, and history. During this talk, you will discover the rich heritage of bagpipes in Spain from the medieval ages onwards. Based on ethnographic research carried out over the last twenty years, Cassandre Balosso-Bardin will take you on a journey across Galicia, Asturias, Aragon, Catalonia and Mallorca, sharing the music and culture of these regions, illustrated with photos and music from her personal collections, as well as live performances on Spanish bagpipes.

Cassandre Balosso-Bardin is an Assistant Professor in Cultural Musicology at KU Leuven. She is the founding director of the International Bagpipe Organisation and the co-creator of International Bagpipe Day, which is celebrated worldwide. Cassandre is a conservatoire-trained musician in early music, and plays the recorders and bagpipes internationally. She is currently writing a book about bagpipe cultures across the world.
