Protest songs are rooted in the history of the legendary Chilean band: Inti Illimani.

These ambassadors of the nueva cancion, committed song still alive today and originating from Latin America at the end of the 1960s, have collaborated with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, John Williams, Paco Peña, Mercedes Sosa, Silvio Rodriguez and Isabelle Parra. In 2023, they are still symbolizing the power of resistance.

Their story begins in the spring of 1967 at the Universidad Técnica de Santiago in Chile. Inti Illimani means “Sun of Illimani”, a mountain in the Bolivian Andes. For half a century, the group has been embodying the soul of the Andes through more than 30 different flutes, strings and percussion instruments, in sophisticated arrangements of poetic and committed songs conveying a unique emotion. During one of their Italy tours in 1973, General Pinochet seized power in Chile following a bloody coup d’état. Exiled in Italy, these musicians will pursue the resistance until 1988.

It is therefore no coincidence that they are collaborating today with the politically active Italian composer, Giulio Wilson, for their brand new album Agua which reflects the pressing subjects of our time, from human rights to social and environmental struggles.
