Orally transmitted in Aleppo for decades now, the rich Sufi musical tradition is currently threatened by the war occurring in Syria. Jawa’s mission is to preserve this heritage and to perform it for the first time with a group of musicians from Syria, Belgium, Palestine and from the Maghreb. The Sufi masters, who’s musical tradition has been well kept, are gradually disappearing from the front scene, and a danger from which they can lose this treasure of songs forever. Jawa Band presents traditional musical pieces from its own perspective and vision, while keeping the classical way of performing Sufi muwashahat with its intricate rhythms and oriental maqams. Their album is divided into 5 wasalas: suites of pieces that follow one another according to their form and their speed on a maqam. They are joined during their performance by the dance of the turners who express the joy and love of the divine being. Jawa is the strength of passion, the one that inherits sadness.
