In the spirit of the singer-artist Wannes van de Velde, the troubadours of “Toasaves” invite the listener to take a trip along various European world harbours and the sounds from across the sea. Of course there is the cosmopolitan port of Antwerp, where Wannes as a youngster quickly came into contact with all kinds of cultures that through their language, history and music left their mark on his ideas and musical quest, but there is also the symbolic port of Brussels where people from all corners of the world come to visit.
Based on the folk repertoire of Wannes van de Velde, Toasaves travels through ancient music (trecento, Flemish polyphony, Sephardic music) and Eastern music (Greece, Turkey, Afghanistan). Toasaves unites these repertoires thanks to a rich set of instruments: lavta (Cretan lute), oed (Turkish lute), uilleann pipes (bagpipes), hurdy-gurdy, pandero cuadrado (Spain), cisters and vedels…
