Courses overview

Trad Violin

Aurélie Dorzée
MABO - Lycée Maria-Boodschap - Rue de la Braie 22, 1000 Bruxelles

The course will focus on developing the technique of playing the violin: its articulation, sound, phrasing, ornaments, pizzicato, col legno, swing, and chords. The musical material will be drawn from the repertoire of traditional dances like the Scottish, the mazurka, the “bourrée”, the waltz, the reel, the jig … melodies from Europe, France, the Scandinavian countries, the Balkans. Aurélie Dorzée will also address creative improvisation and the relationship between the body and the instrument: relaxation, dancing, singing with the instrument.

You’ll practice the search for countermelodies and specific violin accompaniments. You’ll be able to create your own compositions based on improvisations, modes, small rhythmic and melodic exercises. You’ll acquire the tools to develop you own musical path to the instrument and the voice.

You will learn the melodies by ear. Improvisation will be based on every region’s modes and musical scales.

  • The workshops can be given in French, Dutch and/or English.
  • The workshops are open to viola players.
  • The courses will be organized according to three levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced.

The cycles consists of 3 intensive workshops in group. For more info, send an email to:

Aurélie Dorzée

Aurélie Dorzée obtained her first prize in violin with great distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the class of Véronique Bogaerts, her first prize in music theory as well as parallel courses at the Conservatory of Liège and the first prize in chamber music at the Conservatory of Mons.

At the age of 15, Aurélie Dorzée discovered the music of Béla Bartok. It was a revelation that made her want to study traditional music. This discovery was to be decisive in her musical career.

For 20 years, numerous encounters and collaborations, recordings and tours have taken her to all corners of the globe. She has never stopped developing her repertoire and knowledge, sharing them on stage and by teaching.

A 3-year tour in France for the Jeunesses Musicales gave more than 20,000 children the opportunity to attend the show Pipa Polo, a musical tale on the Silk Road that she created with Tom Theuns in 2015.

She plays special instruments such as the trumpet violin, the viola d’amore, the nail violin and uses the voice as an instrument alongside the violin.
