Manouche (swing) violin
The object of these lessons is to teach violinists to play tunes and harmonies by ear. The repertoire will consist of tunes by Django Reinhard, Tchavolo and Dorado Schmitt, and from the valse muzette repertoire. This course is taught in group lessons. While one student improvizes, the other learns the harmonies of the piece. Each student will be kept busy all the time.
The lessons consist of:
- learning tunes by ear
- learning the harmonies of a piece
- how to accompany someone on your violin
- learning to improvise
- harmonic theory
Pupils will be divided by level. A basic knowledge of the instrument is required.
Classes are held weekly on Wednesdays from 17:30 to 22:00. Group lessons last one hour.
Anouk Sanczuk started playing the violin as a 4-year old, following the Suzuki method. Due to other influences, she got hooked on folk music. She founded Falafel, a folk band that won the Balrally in 2007, provided by Boombal and Muziekmozaïek. In 2009 she co-founded the collective Broers, that was chosen ‘best newcomer of the year’ (Folkroddels) in 2010 and that won the Dranouter Rootsrally. Tours followed in Belarus (2013), China (2013) and Hong Kong (2014)
After years of going back and forth between jazz and folk, she started taking jazz violin with Françoise Derissen at the Brussels Royal Conservatory in 2011. In 2012 she got involved in a new project, led by Wouter Vandenabeele (our teacher folk music ensemble): ‘the Ghent Folk Violin Project’, of which the first album has been recorded. She has collaborated with artists such as: N’Faly Kouyaté, Issa Sow, Mamy Kanouté and Bao Sissoko. She took masterclasses with Kyriakos Gouventas, Casey Driessen, Marcel Ramba et Alexandre Cavalière.
