Introduction to Turkish music
During the lessons “Introduction to Turkish music”, we will examine and learn how to understand and play Turkish music, with its Maqams and rhythms. We will teach you special bowing and ornamentation techniques, fundamental in order to acquire the authentic sound of the different forms of Turkish music. Students will, in the process, acquire a unique repertoire.
Classes will begin by improving the students’ techniques. Gradually we will show students how to apply these techniques easily. We will also focus on improvisations (Taksim) with Turkish Maqams.
The course is open for beginners as well as experienced musicians.
All instruments are normally welcome, but please contact the teacher in advance to see if the instrument can be integrated into the course.
You can sign up for individual 30 minute classes, per week, on Tuesdays, between 5:30 and 8 pm. Collective 1 hour long classes are also possible for advanced students.
Music theory is not required, but it is a clear advantage.
Damla Aydin started playing music when she was ten years old. She studied both Turkish and Western classical music at the ITU (Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory) for sixteen years. Aydin has developed unique techniques on the cello, in order to express the authenticity of Turkish music. She has a great understanding of the history and feeling of Maqam music. Her repertoire includes Turkish classical and folk music. Having had private classes with many well-known Turkish music composers, she has a solid understanding about improvisation (Taksim) techniques. She has been sharing her experience with her students for ten years. She has been living, and developing her music projects, in Belgium for two years.
