Don’t let yourself be fooled by the seemingly simple appearance of the setar, or Iranian longnecked lute. The ancestor of this centuries-old instrument, the tanbura, was rediscovered in carvings in the south of Iran dating from 1500 BCE. Because in earlier times it had three strings, it acquired the name setar, which actually means “three strings” in Farsi. The modern setar has four strings. In traditional music the setar often accompanies singing, but it may also be played as a solo instrument.
In the course you will learn the basic techniques of the instrument, with the emphasis being placed onthe repertoire of Iranian traditional and classical music.
For this course a prior knowledge of music theory or the ability to read music will be necessary.
The teacher can help you to look for an instrument. Get in touch with Muziekpublique for further information.
