Maqam improvisation (ottoman music)
Due to personal reasons, this course will not be able to start in January.
Do you want to learn to improvise and create music with others? Do you have a preference for Ottoman music? Then this course might be for you! The course will focus on the improvisation of Turkish music and maqam. We will work around the maqams (scales in Arabic music) and the concept of taksim or improvisation.
Under the guidance of Turkish cellist, Damla Aydin, students will learn to create musical phrases together by learning the maqams and how to use them. We will also look at other scales in Turkish music. This will not be done in a theoretical way, but in a practical way using your instrument or your voice. No scores will be used, everything is done by improvisation! At the end of each lesson, you will have created an original piece of music as a group.
The course is open to all instruments, including voice!
Damla Aydin started playing music when she was ten years old. She studied both Turkish and Western classical music at the ITU (Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory) for sixteen years. Aydin has developed unique techniques on the cello, in order to express the authenticity of Turkish music. She has a great understanding of the history and feeling of Maqam music. Her repertoire includes Turkish classical and folk music. Having had private classes with many well-known Turkish music composers, she has a solid understanding about improvisation (Taksim) techniques. She has been sharing her experience with her students for ten years. She has been living, and developing her music projects, in Belgium for two years.
