Kaval (Romanian flute)
The kaval (or caval) is a flute that traditionally is often played by shepherds. The flute is held at an oblique angle of 45 degrees and can be played with or without a mouthpiece. Depending on the region, the sound of this instrument varies, and there are different variations, both chromatic and diatonic. Adrian Receanu has specialised in the mastery of the Romanian Kaval with mouthpiece, which falls into the category of the recorder kaval. What is special about this kaval is that it has only 5 holes, whereby you can play various tones from very high to very low, and this in different keys. With the help of this flute virtuoso, you can easily learn to play the repertoire of melodies from Romania that are as enchanting as they are varied.
Adrian Receanu was born in 1980 in Moldova where he began his studies of clarinet and traditional flutes. In 1999 he was invited to the ‘Rencontres Internationales de la Clarinette Populaire de Glomel’. Adrian then returned to France to perfect his skills at the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt and at the ATLA in Paris.
Since 2000, he has participated in various projects, both on stage and in the studio: The Other Europeans Band (a European research project on klezmer / lautaresc repertoires from the 1920s to the present day in Moldavia), French chansons with Enrico Macias and Nanook, Romanian music with Norig and Rona Hartner, klezmer music with Jake Shulman-Ment and Sphilkès, ball music with La Menina sin Nombre and contemporary music with Thérèse Brenet’s “Boustrophédon”.
He has a great passion for the transmission of these genres and can regularly be found at workshops and master classes organised in France and abroad on the clarinet within traditional music: e.g. Yiddish Summer Weimar, École de Musique de Plouay, Errichetta Underground Festival Roma or at the Musée de la Cité de la Musique of the Paris Philharmonic.
