Introduction to Iranian music
In this collective course, Shahab invites you to discover through theory and practice the richness of Persian music, the fundamentals of this ancient musical culture. The course is open to all instrument, with basic knowledge. Shahad will teach you the 4 main notions of Iranian musical culture. You will first learn the different forms of Iranian music. Then, the different modes of Iranian music (Dastgâh et âvâz) that correspond to complex melodic patterns from with the musician will be able to improvise. Shahab will also tackle the radif, which is the most important repertoire of Iranian traditional music, transmitted through generations. Finally, he will detail the different methods for improvising in Iranian music.
For this course, you need prior knowledge in music theory or solfège.

Shahabeddin Azinmehr was born in 1985 in Teheran and has a bachelor’s degree in restauration of historic monuments and a master’s degree in Persian music. His musical journey began with singing, but he has afterwards learned to play the tar and the setar. Mohammad Musavi, Dariush Talai, Mas’ud Sho’ari, Behruz Hemmati and Reza Parvizzade are some of the masters with whom he studied.
He has taken part in several concerts and albums as accompanying instrumentalist. His first solo album, Showq-e Mastur, is a solo performance of setar. Since 2020, he has become a member of the Belgian band Refa.
