The balafon is a type of xylophone that is found in many parts of Africa. Composed of twenty or so strips of wood that cover gourds with different musical ranges, the instrument is played with sticks covered in rubber. It is one of Africa’s most melodious instruments.
Mady Kouhaté is from Guinea-Conakry. He is the grandson of Konkoba, and has always been surrounded by the musical traditions of the Mandinka people. Like his cousin N’Faly Kouyaté, he has studied the balafon, tama and guitar. Mady has performed on stage with the mythical band Bembeya Jazz, as well as excellent contemporary groups such as Les Amazaones de Guinée, Malick Pathé Sow & Maoba or N’Faly Kouyaté & Dunyakan
